​Starting Monday, April 22 the unique varieties listed below will be available for purchase at the garden. All the plants are grown from seed and were specially selected because they grow well in our cooler coastal climate and should in your garden too.

​These and other varieties will be available for sale in the old greenhouse and will be listed on here as new varieties become available so check back often.

Astrakhanskie

70-75 days. Big, red beefsteak variety from the Astrakhan region of Russia. The  beefsteak with flavor to match, Astrakhanskie is one of our go-to varieties when harvesting for the kitchen.Great earliness and high yields. Large, red fruit have a flattened oblate shape with some attractive ribbing and can reach up to 1 lb. Best flavor when slightly under ripe. Tall, floppy vines are productive for an heirloom. Berkeley Tie-Dye

65-75 days. Big, succulent fruit can reach 8–12 ounces with a complex blend of flavors. The vivid, rosy-blushed fruit has iridescent, green skin with sunny yellow streaks and an interior that’s a fascinating kaleidoscope of green with trails of red and yellow. The relatively compact, indeterminate plants produce early for such a large tomato.

Big Brown Sugar

A Russian heirloom with silky texture and a smoky, complex flavor. Black tomatoes are famous for their rich, nuanced flavor, and the 7-oz., globe- shaped fruit of Brown Sugar does not disappoint. Black Krim

Russian heirloom.
Black Krim combines bold, smoky flavor and good texture with an unusual appearance. Deep brown/red, 8-16 oz. tomatoes have brown/green shoulders that get darker with more heat and sunlight. High-yielding. Indeterminate.

Black Prince

The indeterminate vines are vigorous and loaded with 3-5oz deep garnet/dark brown blushed oblong tomatoes. A fruity richness that lingers on the tongue and satisfies that deep summer craving for warm peaceful days, lemonade, and juicy tomato sandwiches. Brandywine

One of the most flavorful tomatoes.
We describe Brandywine's luscious, heirloom flavor as "very rich, loud, and distinctively spicy." The large fruits, often over 1 lb., have a deep pink skin and smooth, red flesh. The medium-tall, potato-leaf plant is best staked or caged. Our 'Quisenberry' strain is considered among the best. Indeterminate.

Costoluto

80 days. Costoluto refers to the distinct flattened, heavily ribbed shape of various Italian heirlooms. This gorgeous selection comes from Florence and impressed us with its early maturity of brilliant red, 4 inch wide by 1 ½ inch tall tomatoes. Fruit are juicy and flavorful for slicing but really shine when slow-roasted or cooked down into a rich sauce. Indeterminate plants perform well in both hot and cooler climates.

Cour di Bue

Heirloom with unusual pear shape and burgundy color.
Good yields of 4–6 oz. fruit with excellent, rich flavor. Harvest when shoulders are still green for best flavor.

Fiaschetto di Manduria

A65–70 days. Italian heirloom ("flask of Manduria") has plum-shaped red fruit, pointed at the end. Good for sauces and canning. Excellent for drying in the sun or oven. Determinate.

Inca Jewel

Compact plants produce beautiful 8-12 ounce fruit with a very sweet, rich, dark tomato flavor. 10 out of 10 people liked the port wine colored beefsteak with metallic green stripes better than Cherokee Purple in a farmers market taste off.

Japanese Trifele

​80-85 days. A truly transcendent tomato. Pear-shaped fruit has green-streaked shoulders, deepening to a burnished mahogany and finally to a darkened, nearly black base. The meaty interior has similar, opulent shades and an incomparable, complex and rich flavor to match. The fruit reach 2 ½–3 inches long and wide and are very crack resistant. Indeterminate, potato-leafed plants.

Marvel Stripe

Heirloom with strong, climbing vines bearing large sunny gold fruits shot through with rose-red, giving them a beautiful marbleized effect. Flavor is mild, sweet & smooth.

Northern Ruby

This variety was handed to us by friend and seed steward Rowan White at a seed swap many years ago. Originally a Heintz variety, it was maintained by a Montana grower for over 20 years selecting for early maturity and a compact shape. In the field it often seemed as though there was more tomato than plant to them. The very short (2-2.5’) bushy plants are nearly solid bricks of fruit starting to ripen very early and continuing for us until frost or blight does them in. In drier climates I would grow them without support, but with our maritime moisture and blight pressure, we’d recommend doing your best to keeping them as upright as possible. The fleshy fruit purees to a very creamy sauce with classic paste flavor. Very rare. Determinate.

Paul Robeson

​Gorgeous color of deep red blended with chocolate-black that is rightly associated with delicious flavor, typically rich, sweet and almost smoky. A tomato that get this tasty in our cool climate. Paul Robeson rarely cracks, is blemish free, and is high yielding of 6-12 oz fruit even in less than optimal conditions.

Sun Gold

Exceptionally sweet, bright tangerine-orange cherry tomatoes leave everyone begging for more. Vigorous plants start yielding early and bear right through the season. Tendency to split precludes shipping, making these an exclusively fresh-market treat. The taste can't be beat.

Super Bush

These scrumptious hybrid tomatoes are specially bred for abundant yields on space saving 2 1/2 to 3 foot plants. They are perfect for growing in large pots and patio containers. Super Bush bears juicy fruits with full-sized sweet tomatoey flavor, not bland or watery like so many other bush varieties. It’s a treat to walk out the back door and pick them still warm from the sun. A perfect way to enjoy the incomparable flavor of vine-ripe tomatoes even when you have limited garden space.

Buena Mulata

​A very rare, extremely productive, and stunning hot pepper being offered exclusively through Baker Creek! William Woys Weaver introduced us to this pepper from his grandfather's collection. His grandfather received the pepper from African-American painter Horace Pippin in 1944. A chameleon-like pepper that undergoes color changes during ripening; from violet to pink, then orange changing to brown, and eventually to a deep red. The long, round pods reach 6 to 7 inches in length and undergo a unique flavor change as they ripen, with the reds being more sweet and meatier than the violet. The stunning plants also make wonderful potted specimens.

Czech Black

The most productive field hot pepper we’ve grown in the PNW for 10 years running. Maturing from glossy black to a glowing garnet red color and perfect for ristras and fresh use in place of the slightly spicier Jalapenos. Bears fruit weeks before all our other hot peppers. Juicy, med-thick walled, and perfect for pickling. Great eating quality in both color stages.
65 days green, 80 days dark red.

King of the North

Early, good-sized peppers of a heavy yielding habit. The variety thrives in the cooler summer weather so prevalent in New England and yields crisp bells, green ripening to red, right up until frost.

Jimmy Nardello

75 days. An almost uncanny sweet, fruity flavor makes these peppers tempting and delightful eaten straight off the plant, but traditional Italian cuisine typically uses them for frying. The long, slender fruit will easily reach 6–9 inches starting green and ripening to red. Super productive, disease-resistant plants.

Lipstick

A delectable bright red pimento type pepper that performs exceptionally well in northern climates. These 4-inch-long pointed peppers have super sweet, thick flesh, making them ideal for both eating fresh and cooked. It is a widely adaptable variety that will produce plenty of fruit, even in northern climates with cooler summer weather.

Stocky Red Rooster

We grew this red, Italian type pepper for market and loved it for its sweet flavor raw, roasted, or cooked, as well as its productivity and size (4-6″ long, 2″ wide at shoulders). It turns out we weren’t alone, as Stocky Red Roaster fared better than all other varieties in the 2012 Northern Organic Variety Improvement Collaborative (NOVIC) trials and is probably the open pollinated Italian type pepper of choice – it is certainly one of the best for roasting. The ripe red fruit hold quality for weeks, if not months, once picked and stored in a cool location. 

EGGPLANTS

Chinese String

Our favorite eggplant is so long and skinny that the Chinese named it after a piece of string! This is the most slender, tender and best-tasting variety we have grown!  This marvelous eggplant is so sweet it is even delicious raw in salads, and this buttery, tender East China variety is our top choice for doing just that! Very high-yielding plants produce profusions of 10- to 15-inch long fruit with lavender-violet skin and snowy white flesh. A superior choice for sautéing, grilling, and more! Fire up the wok and make the best pan of Chinese eggplant you will ever taste! Eggplant has an ancient history in China, where it is used for food and medicine. This is a masterpiece of thousands of years of eggplant selection from this amazing land.  We grow these almost year-round in our greenhouses and outdoors in the warmer months  They are super quick to mature.  We cook the new baby fruit whole like green beans, only these are better!

Orient Express

The most dependable Asian eggplant.
High-yielding plants produce armloads of attractive, slender, glossy fruits 8–10" long by 1 1/2–2 1/2" diameter. Ready up to 2 weeks before other early varieties. Sets fruit in cool weather and under heat stress. Tender, delicately flavored, and quick-cooking. NOTE: Has a tendency towards slow emergence, and may need more time to germinate than other eggplant varieties. Purple calyx.
